One end is another’s beginning

So a while back I thought I was going to write about the other day of classes I have.  I didn’t.

Since this is the final full week of classes and as of this time next week I will be completely done, I’ll write about them now.

HIST2350 – Modern China.  Oh.  Wow.  As part of my degree program, I am required to take a “diversity” class that will educate me about something other than the normal stuff you get at US schools and will broaden your horizons from the usual programming, techie, weird stuff.  This class has pretty much been really fun and interesting while completely kicking my tookus.  Readings twice a week, every week, quizzes about every other week, really intense midterm, research paper, and a final I haven’t taken yet.

I started out really confident about my research paper but got my original proposal turned down.  I took some time to rethink it and finally it came to me on a ride home from the Cape.  I sat down over the weekend and wrote the entire thing from all the notes I collected.  It’s pretty awesome right now.   I spoke with the professor today and he seemed reassuring that I could still do well.  I give it a B overall.  I would probably take a different class if I had a choice to do it again but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy learning as much as I have.

IS4800 – Empirical Research Methods.  Pretty typical research class.  Learn about the different types of studies, do them.  Rinse, repeat.  The professor tries his best to be interesting and keep us interested and I have to respect him for that.  The second half of the semester has be more exciting than the first because we are running full scale studies.  It’s also a little stressful because it’s random groups that change for each study and the pile of end of semester work was high before the studies.  This one gets a B but mostly because there really needs to be a way to make the first half of the semester less dry.

MISM3305 – Information Resource Management.  Holy crap.  This is the slowest, driest as the Sahara, most bleh class ever.  We sit and stare at the professor stumble through something that is almost but not quite a lecture.  We have a final but no graded materials to use as any sort of guide as to what will be on the final and how she will grade.  Luckily, we have a final paper and presentation that she has, more or less, handed to us.  While that makes it easy, it also makes it terrible because she gives us research materials that she wrote.  This class gets a C-, so close to giving you credits toward your degree but really just hanging there to be a monkey on your back.  Take it if someone else teaches and if it’s not TuF 325-505, maybe it will be fun.  Maybe.

So there you go, my Tuesday/Friday classes for this semester.  As a former coworker says, “Fun and exciting stuff.”

Jobs?

As discussed before, Northeastern has this wacky Co-op program in which you take classes for 6 months and then work for 6 months.  This gives students the advantage of real-world experience and a killer resume for after graduation at the expense of attending school for an extra year at the benefit of only having to pay tuition for when you are in classes.  (Yes Virginia, that was a run-on sentence.)

This semester signifies the last time I will choose a co-op.  Yup, this is number 3.  The big finale.  Will he get a job or be doomed to live in his parents’ attic alone forever?  Maybe not that dramatic but I’m listening to the Dark Knight soundtrack so give me some slack.

Part of the process of finding a new co-op is to speak with your co-op advisor and discuss your goals, details of what types of jobs fit you, etc.  When I spoke with my advisor, who is a pretty cool dude, he told me there may not be a job fit for my skills and level of abilities.   o.o  -.-

Generally, I avoid smileys and whatnot in my writing but I really wanted to emphasize that point.  No one wants to trust an intern with the responsibilities I’m prepared for.  Going out on a limb here, that sucks!  Lucky for me, part of my goal for this co-op is to find a potential full-time employer.  This could be a six-month training period.

Anyway, being a resourceful guy, my advisor told me he would reach out to some of the college’s contacts and see what was available but not posted.  We also discussed returning to my last co-op/current part-time job.  While this is an option, it really depends on what knowledge I can get out of it and if taking a full-time position is 1. in the cards and 2. in anyway useful in furthering my career.

Getting old is tough.  For any of you not in college yet, find something right now that will keep you thinking like a 5-year old.  You may get a posting on FML or MLIA but it’s totally worth it.  15 minutes of fame on the Internet can last a lifetime.

In closing, I look good in red.  Check it out. -buttdance, buttdance-     (http://www.homestarrunner.com/vcr_hs.html for those who do not know.)

First class of Summer I

To start, Northeastern University is odd.  We take a standard of five (5) years to graduate and after the first year (or so) we begin switching between six months of classes (a semester and a half) and six months of coop.  Coop is the greatest thing ever.  Classes are the antithesis of that.

Today was the first day of my first Summer semester at Northeastern.  My first class was more interesting than I expected but still starts at 800 and requires me to wake up at 630.

On the lighter side of things, my professor looks and acts like Nathan Lane in The Producers.  He does not sound like him though, I’m disappointed.  There are also two girls (and possibly a third) who have their hair and makeup done similarly and were pretty much wearing the same clothes.  I died a little inside.  Finally, there is one girl who reminds me of Meredith from The Office.  I would have laughed when I noticed but she looked like she didn’t need someone laughing at her.

On the flipside of things, my mom wanted to take pictures of me this morning.  Did anyone else have embarrasing pictures taken every first day of school from kindergarten through Jr. High?  One of these days I will find them all and make a collage or something entertaining like that.  Maybe I should start taking pictures of my mom on her first day of school?  Nah… that means I would have to get up early.

Final thoughts, campus is pretty dead in the summer and I am going to start eating lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Maybe.  I’ll see how my next class goes.

Administrators

And not the computer types.  I’m talking decision making, highly paid professional morons.  Oh, wait, morons?  Well, not all the time.

After the events of yesterday, I’m not terribly pleased with some of the higher ups in the Northeastern food chain.  Why?  Because I had classes.  Or rather, I had one class.  But that has nothing to  do with the administration.  My professors for my first and last class cancalled the classes due to the snow and just plain horrible conditions.  The one professor who did have class is a person I’m not totally convinced is a full out prof yet.  She might be a grad student or something.  She enjoys teaching too much.

So anyway, I drove in to NU yesterday at 11.  That was quite possibly the worst time for me to drive in.  It was snowing like a crazy mo-fo and the roads were pretty slick.  But I arrived in one piece and only hit one curb (due to lack of snow plow action and I checked it out today, the thing juts out into the road… totally not my fault).  I parked in the garage and trudged my way through the muck and mess of campus to sit in the library before class.  After class I grabbed a wrap from Mondo’s and went to lay down in the classroom for my next class but, lo!  Thar be a sign on yonder door.  Class cancelled.

Most pointless day ever.  On my way to my next task (which should have been done at 11 instead of 4), I get sludged by a plow on the opposite side of Route 1.  No plow should ever go 50 and be able to launch stuff into the middle lane of the opposing direction.

Blah.  Administration of NU, I point my finger in your direction and say if it snows like this again you better cancel classes.

In other news, zombies have invaded Austin, TX (thanks to Dan) and I think I have a good calendar page for tomorrow.
