Work, work, work

So I work at Smarter Travel Media, LLC here in MA.  Probably the coolest job I’ve ever had.  To be fair, I’ve had four jobs in my life.  But being a Systems Administration Intern and getting treated like a Jr. Systems Administrator is one of the greatest feelings I could get from a job.  Of course, this is still just a coop and I have to go back to school in January.  I’ve been up to my eyeballs in work since the day I started and I really wouldn’t have it any other way.  I am responsible for the development environment and although it’s not the real world facing servers, if that stuff isn’t right, it’s time to drop everything and work.

Last night I went to Dethklok at the House of Blues in Boston.  That was a very impressive concert.  After the concert, I was going to buy tickets for another show a few weeks from now but had to check my voicemail first to see if anyone called me, wanting to go.  Instead of getting the message I expected, I had a message from my boss telling me stuff was broken and people were slightly upset.  So at midnight when I got home, I went to work.  It was a quick fix and got things running for the people who needed them but it made me laugh because I was really playing the part of a sysadmin.  I was up, tired, and thinking of different ways to test a config change because I didn’t have a VPN login.

The best though was the reaction I received today at work.  My boss asked me what I was doing last night that prevented me from answering my phone at 1030 but allowed me to check my email at midnight.  The people I fixed things for were surprised that when they woke up, everything was fine.  It made me chuckle and truthfully, it was the right thing to do.  I have a responsibility to keep the environment running and mistakes or broken configs must be changed not because someone asked but because it’s why they trust me.

And somehow, that makes me one happy dude.

So go out there, find a job you enjoy and perform every part of it to the fullest extent.  Make it fun and make it count.

Next time, I’ll have more calendar pages.  I had two ready but they are upstairs and I am not.

This is a set up.

It’s true.  I’m bringing you a calendar page but it’s with a very clear I have a another message to present.  So here it goes.

365 Stupidest Things Said on… Yes, Indeed It Is.

“Stress is more than just a five-letter word.” – newscaster Chris Eby, CFTO (Toronto) news.

Stress is definitely the number one source of people’s problems.  It’s also completely unavoidable.  Even this morning I was subject to a bit of stressful material.

DISCLAIMER TIME!  This is where my personal thoughts come into play.  If you don’t like it, you are more than welcome to have a constructive conversation with me but if you are going to QQ, just leave now.

This was on a forum I was checking up on this morning.

“
Kinda, but no. Seriously, the size of her chest was…disappointingly large. They are almost hideously too big. In my humble opinion, her acting talent needs to be overwhelmingly good because I just can’t take someone seriously that has such a personality deficiet that they have to rely on immature sex appeal.

It’s like an ugly stripper that gets double D implants because only watermelon sized breasts can make her any money because of her overwhleming lack of beauty and talent.

Personally, I feel insulted that a woman would think men were such simpletons.
Men are such simpletons. It is pretty much a given that a man would choose that big breasted medium over a good personality and A cups.”

The part in not italics was the response to the

in italics.

That response was downright offensive.  The fact that people expect men to be simpletons interested in a woman’s looks really got under my skin.  Does no one believe in having healthy relationships with people who you simply enjoy talking to?

I have a perfectly awesome relationship with a person who, while quite attractive on the outside, has an amazing personality and matches very well with me.  Ok, sure you can say that because my girlfriend is a looker in her own right, I am biased.  Take it with a grain of salt or anything you like but being able to get along with someone and have an intelligent conversation goes above and beyond being able to just look at someone or get your rocks off.

Ah, anyway… getting back to the stress thing.  Instead of getting all worked up about that again, I’m going to move along and lay down for the night.  The best way to deal with stress is to decide it isn’t worth getting worked up about.
